About Me

My journey to becoming a therapist was driven by a desire to support individuals in high-stress, high-risk careers, helping them navigate the complex relationship between their personal and professional lives. I recognized that stressors in one area often affect the other, creating a cycle of distress. As a licensed mental health professional, my focus is on the intersection of work and personal life, with the goal of enhancing overall satisfaction and supporting holistic well-being.

I began my work with first responders, a group particularly vulnerable to traumatic stress. Over time, I expanded my research and practice to other high-pressure professions, all of which face unique mental health challenges, including exposure to trauma, anxiety, public scrutiny, and performance demands. These factors can significantly affect individuals’ mental well-being and ability to function both at work and in their personal lives.

Through my work with first responders and professionals in similar high-stress fields, I’ve gained insights into the distinct stressors and mental health needs within these professions. While each field has its own set of challenges, the common threads of trauma, stress, and scrutiny provide a foundation for understanding and addressing the mental health needs of individuals across all high-risk professions. By integrating these insights, I tailor my therapeutic approach to meet the specific needs of professionals in any field, fostering resilience and overall well-being.

My Bio

I transitioned from a career as a Paramedic/Firefighter to become a professional counselor, earning my Master's in Education from Old Dominion University in 2009 through a CACREP-accredited program. My experience includes outpatient private practice and crisis mental health services. I believe it’s vital for both practitioners and the public to understand the science behind mental health therapy, as well as to combat misinformation that can hinder therapy success and perpetuate stigma. Outside of work, I value time with my spouse, children, and dogs. I enjoy traveling, sports (baseball, ice hockey, MMA, and running), and playing percussion, especially drums. You’ll often find me at sporting events, rock concerts, or exploring historical landmarks, where I enjoy learning and documenting the details of significant sites, particularly in U.S. and World History.
