About Me
My journey to becoming a therapist was profoundly influenced by a desire to support individuals in high-stress and high-risk careers navigating the complex interplay between their personal and professional lives. I recognized that the stressors encountered at work not only impact mental well-being but also reverberate into personal life, and vice versa with personal stressors reverberating into professional life, creating a cycle of distress. Throughout my career, this dual focus has been at the heart of my research and clinical practice. As a licensed mental health professional, I concentrate on the clinical mental health matters that influence occupational functioning, personal life functioning, and the interplay between all areas of life functioning. My goal is to enhance overall satisfaction in both personal and professional domains, empowering individuals to achieve holistic well-being and thrive in all aspects of their lives.
When my mental health career began, I concentrated my research on first responders, a field that significantly impacts the well-being of individuals who often face traumatic stressors. Over the years, I have been fortunate to expand my research and practice into other high-stress and high-risk professions. My previous lived experiences have shaped my focus, leading me to explore the mental health challenges faced by athletes and musicians. Both groups encounter unique pressures that can adversely affect their mental well-being, from performance anxiety to the demands of competition and public scrutiny. By delving into these areas, I aim to raise awareness and develop strategies that can support the mental health of these individuals, ensuring they have the necessary resources to thrive both personally and professionally.
In my collaborations with first responders, I've interacted with both volunteer and career personnel, gaining insights into their unique challenges and needs. Similarly, my research and experience with athletes spans all levels, from beginners and recreational participants to elite amateurs and professionals, allowing me to understand the varying demands of athletic performance. Furthermore, my research and practice with professional musicians has included studio and touring musicians, as well as other essential music-related professionals who contribute to the industry. These various professions present their own distinct stressors and experiences that can profoundly impact mental fitness. Each profession, while unique, has its own set of clinical skills that contribute to a successful therapeutic journey. Interestingly, the insights I've gained from researching and working with professional among these diverse fields can be translated into universal concerns that resonate across virtually all occupations. This understanding has enabled me to tailor my services effectively to professionals from different backgrounds, addressing their specific challenges while drawing on the shared experiences that underpin our collective quest for well-being. By integrating these diverse perspectives, I strive to create a supportive environment that fosters resilience and mental fitness for individuals in any profession.
My Bio
I was a career Paramedic/Firefighter before changing careers to become a professional counselor. I graduated from the CACREP-accredited counselor education program at Old Dominion University with a Master's of Science in Education degree in 2009. Throughout my career, I have worked in outpatient private practice as well as in crisis mental health services. In addition to clinical practice, I believe that it is important for not just practitioners to understand the scientific literature on mental health and the science behind professional mental health therapy services, but for the clients and general public to understand it as well. I believe that understanding the credible information and not falling trap to the abundance of misinformation that exists not only helps in making the therapy experience successful, but also decreases the stereotypes and stigmas that often hinder people's pursuit of mental well-being. Outside of my professional life, I cherish quality moments with my spouse, children, and dogs. I enjoy traveling and have a passion for history, sports, and music. My sports interests span various activities, including baseball, ice hockey, MMA, and running. I also find joy in playing the drums and other various forms of percussion. You can often catch me at sporting events, hard rock and heavy metal concerts, and participating in mid-distance and long-distance running races. I can also often be found exploring locations and landmarks that have significance to human history, especially U.S. History and World History; I am that person that takes pictures of everything and reads every word on every information sign at these historically significant of places.
